Striker Lars Veldwijk believes that he has a role to play in the Bafana Bafana squad, and he is honoured to have been called up again to represent South Africa in their critical 2019 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Libya this coming weekend.
Veldwijk, who plies his trade in the Netherlands, has been called up to the Senior National team for the second time in two years, and he believes that his strengths can assist the team against the north Africans should he be given a starting berth.
“I am a striker and all I want to do is score goals. I think that my height will play a vital role in Bafana Bafana if I am tasked to play the number nine position against Libya or come off the bench to make an impact,” Veldwijk told the Safa website.
The 1.96-meter-tall striker was called up to Bafana Bafana back in 2016 during the Fifa World Cup qualifier against Senegal, and although he did not feature in the match, he was happy to be part of the camp.
The gangling striker said he was also excited having taken part in the first training session in Tunisia.
“We worked on some very exciting combinations this morning during training, and the players really put in great efforts in all departments. We should have what it takes to do well come Sunday," he said.
“We have a very good squad here and all the players are very dedicated and true professionals. It is very nice for me to be back in the team and see some old, familiar and new faces,” said Veldwijk.
Bafana Bafana currently sit second in Group E with 9 points and will need a draw or better against Libya to qualify for the 2019 Africa n Cup of Nations to be played in Egypt from 21 June 2019 – 19 July 2019.
