FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera came to the defence of referees, who have come under scathing attack this season for their error-prone judgments, in the Indian Super League (ISL) ahead of their match against Kerala Blasters in Kochi.

Goa too have suffered due to poor decisions by the match officials especially in their two away matches against Mumbai City FC and ATK.

“I think the referees have a tough job. We have to respect the work that they do. And the coaches need to focus on improving the teams. We don’t blame the referees. We focus on improving,” said Lobera.

The Gaurs have the second worst defensive record in the ISL as they have leaked in 16 goals in nine matches. Lobera mentioned that his team needs to work on the defensive aspect.

“We need to improve defensively. I believe that we are a team that plays an attacking formation with an attacking mindset. When we do attack, we are capable of scoring goals. We will try to find that defensive balance. We are looking towards improving that aspect (conceding silly goals),” said the 41-year-old.

Last month in Goa, Kerala Blasters were handed a 5-2 thrashing in Goa with Ferran Corominas scoring a hat-trick in seven minutes of the second half. Lobera stated that his team will continue to play in the same attacking vein as they have throughout the season.

“What happened in the past is in the past (on 5-2 win). Regardless of whether we are playing at home or away from home, in this league, all the teams are very well balanced.

“It is true that Kerala have a new coach (David James) but we will stick true to our philosophy. Kerala are a well-structured team. They have players with a lot of quality,” said Lobera.
