The Chelsea defender insists he never meant to harm his fellow Spaniard and believes he merely 'jumped a bit higher' than the Arsenal full-back

Marcos Alonso maintains that he did nothing wrong in opening the scoring for Chelsea in their 3-1 victory over Arsenal on Saturday.

The Spaniard reacted quickest to seeing a Diego Costa header cannon off the crossbar, rising above Hector Bellerin to nod home.

He did, however, clatter into the Gunners full-back in getting to the ball, leading to his fellow countryman leaving the field.

'Hazard reminds me of Messi'

Arsene Wenger later revealed that Bellerin had been left concussed by the challenge, with it his opinion that the match officials should not have allowed the effort to stand.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte saw things slightly differently, saying physicality is part of the game in England, and Alonso also believes that he did no more than compete for a loose ball.

He told the club’s official website: “I jumped a bit higher and got to the ball first, I didn’t even see him coming so I don’t think it’s a free-kick.

“I feel sorry for him, he’s a good friend but I didn’t see him. I hope he’s ok.”

Alonso helped to put Chelsea on their way to a comfortable success, with the Blues nine points clear of the chasing pack in the battle to secure the Premier League title.

“I’m happy for another three points, we played a very good game, we were consistent and we need to keep going,” said the Spaniard.

Terry dreaming of Chelsea job

“I think we controlled the game for the 90 minutes. We’re a little bit disappointed with the goal we conceded but it was a very good performance from everyone and now we need to keep our focus and concentration.

“We’re enjoying a good run. Three points against a direct opponent is like six points.

“It was good to score another goal and with the point we got on Tuesday it’s been a very good week for us.”
