Highlands Park impressed by former Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town winger Lebohang Mokoena

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Lebohang Mokoena has impressed Highlands Park head coach Owen Da Gama.

The winger-come-striker is currently a free agent and he is now hoping to earn himself a deal with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit returnees.

Highlands Park are back in the elite league after winning the 2017/18 National First Division (NFD) title.

Mokoena has been without a club since he was released by Ajax Cape Town at the end of the 2016/17 season.

The 31-year-old attacker made six appearances in the league for the Urban Warriors before he was released by the club.

Coach Da Gama confirmed the presence of the former South Africa youth international, who was nurtured in the Pirates academy.

“Yes, Lebo is here training with us. He has been with us since Monday. It has been a week, and so far so good,” Da Gama told The Citizen.

Da Gama, who joined Highlands Park as head coach in 2017, is happy with Mokoena’s fitness having coached the skillful attacker at Pirates between 2007 and 2008.

“He is not a boy who picks up weight easily so he is fit. We have retained most of our players from last season and we need a few players in a few positions to cover,” he continued.

The former Bafana Bafana assistant coach admitted that he needs an experienced player like Mokoena in his squad.

“We definitely need someone with his experience in the squad for next season,” Da Gama concluded.

Mokoena is an experienced player having made his professional debut at Pirates in 2003, and he has also represented South Africa at junior and senior levels.

The Soweto-born attacker won two PSL titles, 2015 Telkom Knockout Cup and 2015 Nedbank Cup during his seven-year spell with Mamelodi Sundowns.
