Daniel Cousin named Gabon head coach following Aubameyang snub

Daniel Cousin has been appointed as the sole coach of Gabon, replacing Spaniard Jose Antonio Camacho.

Aubameyang’s son and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick claimed that his father had been announced as co- coach but had not agreed to take up the job.

Following Aubameyang Senior’s snub, the Gabon Football Federation (Fegafoot) settled for Cousin as the sole head coach.

“He has accepted the post and will reveal his staff in the near future,” Fegafoot told BBC.

Cousin replaces Camacho who managed just two wins, eight draws and six defeats since assuming the role of Gabon coach two years ago.

The 1-0 home defeat to Zambia in an international friendly match earlier this month was the final straw that led to Camacho’s exit.

Just before the defeat to Zambia, third-placed Gabon had been held 1-1 at home by Burundi in a Group C 2019 Afcon qualifier.

Cousin takes over a team which has just one point in two qualifying matches and he begins his reign with home and away fixtures against bottom-placed South Sudan next month.
