Chapman completes Incheon transfer

Australian defender Connor Chapman has moved to K League club Incheon United from Melbourne City for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Incheon confirmed the two-year deal on Monday after Chapman completed his medical with the club and he will leave South Korea on Tuesday to link up with his new team-mates at a training camp in Thailand.

The 22-year-old departs City after 35 A-League games over two-and-a-half seasons having joined from Newcastle Jets in 2014.

"I'm happy to join a big club in the K League - Incheon United," Chapman said in a statement.

"I know that Incheon is one of the most beautiful cities in Korea. I'll do my best to show good performances here."

In their statement announcing Chapman's arrival, Incheon highlighted his ability to play a variety of positions - centre-back, full-back and defensive midfield - and his international experience for various underage levels.

City also released a statement on Monday confirming the transfer but declined to reveal the fee involved.

After playing regularly in his first two seasons at City, Chapman has fallen down the pecking order in 2016-17 and has made just five league appearances.

The rise of 20-year-old Ruon Tongyik has been particularly problematic for Chapman, while he has also struggled to earn games at full-back due to the arrival of Josh Rose and Manny Muscat this season.

Chapman is one of two Australians set to play in the K League Classic - South Korea's top tier - in 2017 alongside Tomislav Mrcela, who is on the books of Jeonnam Dragons.

Former Sydney FC midfielder and Iraq international Ali Abbas, who is a naturalized Australian, plays for Pohang Steelers.

In the second-tier K League Challenge, Adrian Leijer and Bruce Djite play for Suwon FC and Antony Golec is at Bucheon FC 1995.
