Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour Venues: Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour resumes this week in a spectacular setting as Tite leads the Selecao against first Argentina and then Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

One of the greatest sporting arenas anywhere on the planet, the MCG is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and within walking distance from Melbourne city centre.

You can arrive at the stadium by car, bus, train, tram or via a leisurely stroll, with number of footbridges on offer for pedestrians arriving from all directions.

The MCG’s magnificent history dates all the way back to 1853, when the first pavilion was erected for the then 15-year-old Melbourne Cricket Club.

It has since hosted the first-ever Test and the 1992 World Cup final, countless Aussie Rules football Grand Finals, and the 1956 Olympic Games.

David Cassidy, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, U2, Madonna, Elton John and the Three Tenors have all performed at the venue, and Pope John Paul II held a mass there when he visited the city in 1986.

Since then, there have been almost 50 football matches at the MCG, with the record attendance for the sport arriving during the International Champions Cup of 2015, when Real Madrid met Manchester City in front of 99,382 spectators.

The full Brazil team have never graced the MCG, but an under-23 side including Ronaldinho, Adriano, Denilson and Alex de Souza played at the stadium twice in a few days in 1999.

Brazil vs Argentina on Friday is expected to set a new record attendance with a sell-out crowd.

But locals who missed out on the opportunity to see that classic, can still get tickets for the second Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour fixture this month when the Selecao return to the MCG on Tuesday when they meet Australia's own Socceroos.
