Cape Town City are wasting no time in bolstering their squad ahead of the 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
With the current campaign now something of the past, the Citizens will be hard at work attempting to undo the wrongs of the previous season. But before they can think about reinforcing their squad, the City hierarchy would have had the thought of replacing influential captain Robyn Johannes at the back of their minds.
The experienced centre-back is on his way to Bidvest Wits leaving a substantial void in the squad, although Kwanda Mngonyama is expected to step to the plate. Johannes’ influence will be sorely missed, but City have wasted no time in finding a suitable replacement.
According to City boss John Comitis in an interview with Phakaaathi, City have already tied down the services of a North African defender, but his identity is yet to be revealed.
“I’ve signed a player from North Africa. He is a centre-back who has been playing in Europe and I will only disclose the details in about two weeks’ time,” Comitis explained.
Meanwhile, there has been recent talk about a potential swoop for Mamelodi Sundowns’ soon to be out of contract star Khama Billiat, but Comitis is adamant that there is nothing to the links as they have not made an approach for the Zimbabwean.
“I haven’t approached Khama Billiat at all, he has not been on my radar. We had the understanding he was on his way to somewhere else and he had made up his mind so we did not bother at all,” Comitis added.
Furthermore, the City owner expressed his happiness with Ayanda Patosi’s work ethic, especially on the back of what could have been seen as tumultuous waters during the season.
“He is actually very good with the programme … he has been doing light training during the off-season so we have a very focused programme to bring him to his best fitness,” he continued.
Comitis though, reserved his biggest praise for winger Bradley Ralani.
“My goodness, he is very special, unbelievable, he has been really a marvellous player, we saw him doing what he does for us when he was in Europe. We are very excited to have him for the new season,” he concluded.
