Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter undecided on who should start in goal against Libya

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has praised goalkeepers Darren Keet and Ronwen Williams ahead of their clash with Libya in the 2019 Afcon qualifier on Sunday.

The British tactician has a selection headache when it comes to choosing between Keet and Williams to replace number one keeper Itumeleng Khune, who has been ruled out of the crucial encounter due to an injury.

“I wouldn’t like to say who the frontrunner is. Because I think they’re so close that if one of them has a bad week‚ or one has a very good week‚ it’ll be that close,” Baxter said.

Although Bidvest Wits shot-stopper Keet has height and could be the right man to deal with aerial balls launched by the Mediterranean Knights, Baxter says both keepers are equally good to start.

On the other hand, Keet plays with defenders such as the likes of Buhle Mkhwanazi, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Sifiso Hlanti at club level and that could convince Baxter to give him a chance.

“I think if you’re talking purely generally, then Darren is a calmer sort of person. But ‘Ronza’ (Williams) is capable of a big performance, a really big performance,” he added.

Moreover, SuperSport United number one keeper Williams remains the favourite to start against the North Africans because he can strive under pressure and deliver a solid performance.

“You know‚ one of the saves against Chiefs the other night([in the 1-1 draw with SuperSport)‚ when he got out and smothered, I think he’s capable of that,” continued the manager.

“But to do that you’ve got to be in good mental balance. And that’s what we’re going to look at on the camp,” concluded the coach.

Bafana need to avoid a defeat in order to qualify for the finals which will be hosted by Egypt between June and July.
