Baba Rahman's season seems to have come to an abrupt end following Schalke 04's announcement that the injured defender is expected to be out of action for "several months".

On national duty, the left-back was forced off in the first half of Ghana's 1-0 opening day victory over Uganda at the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering what was initially reported to be a thigh injury. The 22-year-old joined Schalke on a season-long loan from English giants Chelsea in August.

"Abdul Rahman Baba’s injury to his left knee was found to be worse than was initially forecasted after his operation in Augsburg yesterday," Schalke announced on Tuesday.

"It presented a picture of a complex rupture to his cruciate ligament along with tears to his internal and external cartilage. The operation was completed without any complications.  The medical team estimate that Baba faces several months on the sidelines."

After the game, Baba optimistically played down the severity of the injury when he spoke to Goal, but initial MRI diagnosis in Libreville on the following day showed a bruised meniscus, effectively signaling an end to his tournament.

Schalke immediately demanded his return to Germany for further examination, but the club have since announced that the defender has flown to London on the request of Chelsea. Although the German side have refused to give a precise timeline for Baba's expected absence, Ghana Football Association boss Kwesi Nyantakyi revealed, according to local reports, that the Black Star will be in the treatment room for seven months.

Baba has so far made 13 Bundesliga appearances for the Royal Blues.
