Sunshine Stars got their pound of flesh from Lobi Stars on Thursday in their rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League tie as they beat the reigning league champions 3-0 at the Akure Township Stadium.
Ten minutes of magic from Amah Chibundu in which the striker netted three quickfire goals ensured that the Owena Whales avenged the lone goal defeat they had suffered in the reverse fixture played in Markurdi over the weekend.
After an uneventful first half, Sunshine Stars came more determined as they were desperate not to drop more precious points at home again.
On their part, the Pride of Benue were also doing their best to get at least a point as the battle for playoff spots in Group A of the NPFL is now getting more intense.
After endless tries, Sunshine Stars finally found a way past Solomon Ogbeide’s men when Amah in the 78th minute did well to create space in the area and powered home the opener for the home team.
There was no long wait for a second goal as Amah increased the tally six minutes after his curtain raiser; driving in solo and dispatched calmly into the bottom from an acute angle.
While Lobi Stars were already downcasted with the two quick goals they let in, more misery was piled on them as Ajah completed his hat-trick in the 87th minute when he tapped in a low cross well delivered to him by his teammate, Fuad Ekelojuoti.
With Thursday’s win, Sunshine Stars have moved away from the relegation zone as they have now amassed 19 points from 14 games.
On their part, Lobi Stars are still in the fourth spot with 20 points.
