India will be competing in Group A at the AFC Asian Cup 2019 alongside hosts UAE, Bahrain and Thailand. The 24-nation continental tournament starts from January 5, 2019, and although the official fixture list is yet to be declared, sources reveal that India is going to start their campaign against Bahrain on January 6, 2019.
Former India skipper Bhaichung Bhutia spoke exclusively to Goal after the draw, sharing his thoughts about India's chances at the tournament. He said, "The draw has been quite good for us. Our FIFA ranking is also good. If you compare it with 2011 it was nightmare group along with Australia, South Korea and Bahrain.
"We are very lucky as we have managed to escape the Asian superpowers. It is not an impossible mission. It is very much possible for us to sneak through the group."
But the Sikkimese Sniper acknowledged that all teams in Asia Cup are tough competitors and with a bit of planning India has the ammunition to get the better of their opponents.
"A win and a draw will be a pretty good result. It will be difficult to put points on the board but with hard work this is achievable," opined Bhutia.
