Who makes Goal's list of the top five Kenyan players of the year?

  • Timothy Odhiambo of Ulinzi Stars.

    Timothy Odhiambo - Kenya/Ulinzi Stars

Odhiambo has been brilliant this year, keeping eight clean sheets so far and being named October's Player of the Month by the Sports Journalist Association in the ongoing Kenyan Premier League season. He has conceded eight goals, with only Gor Mahia conceding fewer.

His exploits with his club have seen him earn a call-up by Francis Kimanzi for both Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt and Togo, and he was also among the goalkeepers who represented Kenya in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda.

Although he has not yet enjoyed a start for Harambee Stars, age is still on his side and can still be a long-term replacement for Patrick Matasi.

  • JOASH ONYANGO of Gor Mahia and Kenya of Harambee Stars.

    Joash Onyango - Kenya/Gor Mahia

The defender has led by example as an assistant captain with Gor Mahia, who are well on course to defend the title. K'Ogalo have just lost once in the 2019/20 season, and have conceded just five goals. His contributions have been central to those achievements.

Onyango has been a mainstay in the Harambee Stars team since making his debut against Ghana last year under Sebastien Migne, and helped Kenya qualify for the 2019 Afcon finals after 15 years in the cold.

He was Kenya's captain in the recent Cecafa finals in Uganda where he played with his typical authority.

  • KENNETH MUGUNA of Gor Mahia vs NORMAN WERUNGA of Zoo Kericho.

    Kenneth Muguna - Kenya/Gor Mahia

The 23-year old has been in excellent form in the KPL, whether he's creating chances, scoring from distance, or showcasing his leadership qualities.

He epitomises what Gor Mahia have been since last season, and helped them lift their 18th KPL title in May.

With Gor well on course to successfully defend the league title and bag a record 19th this term, Muguna's role in their recent form cannot be underestimated.

He has been a regular feature in the national side under Kimanzi after being unfairly overlooked by Migne, and recently featured in the 2021 Nations Cup qualifiers as well as the Cecafa Cup.

  • Kenya's Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga (R) in action against Egypt Player Ahmed Hegazi.

    Michael Olunga - Kenya/Kashiwa Reysol

Olunga helped Kashiwa Reysol earn promotion back to the J1 League and also enjoyed one of the best seasons of his carerer.

The former Thika United and Gor Mahia striker scored his first hat-trick in Japan during Reysol's clash against Renofa Yamaguchi, and was on target seven times again during their most recent fixture against Kyoto Sanga.

His overall goal tally stood at 27 goals, just one behind J2's top scorer Leonardo Souza.

At international level, Olunga was on target twice during the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt, netting two of the Stars' three goals against Tanzania.

The forward also helped Kenya salvage a point in a 1-1 draw against Egypt during the 2021 Afcon qualifier in Alexandria.

  • Victor Wanyama of Kenya and Harambee Stars vs Matthiue Gangni of Togo.

    Victor Wanyama – Kenya/Tottenham Hotspur

Although he has been a peripheral figure at Tottenham Hotspur in recent seasons, Wanyama continues to be a key member of Kenya's Harambee Stars.

He captained the East Africans at the Afcon, and was pivotal to Kenya's critical 1-1 draw against Egypt in Alexandria in November.

The former Southampton midfielder became the second Kenyan to reach the Champions League final when Spurs defeated Ajax in dramatic fashion in the semi-final.

Notably, his contribution, primarily for the national team, earned him the Head of State Commendation from President Uhuru Kenyatta in December.
