The best & worst fake team names on PES & Pro Evo

PES Pro Evo fake team names
Merseyside Red, Man Blue and Rekordmeister are all memorable mentions for previous fake team names on PES and Pro Evo due to naming rights

In honour of Juventus being named Piemonte Calcio in FIFA 20 due to the end of the partnership between the Serie A champions and EA Sports, we've rounded up some of the best fake football team names in Pro Evolution Soccer.

Licensing deals and sponsorships mean that gaming platforms do not get naming rights for the team, forcing them to think of a different, alternate name – and some of the results are amusing, while the rest just hilariously unimaginative.

  • Dion Dublin Aston Villa

    Dublin | Aston Villa

With a name like "Dublin" in PES 2, you'd rightly think that it would be the name given to an Irish team. But no – it was, in fact, Aston Villa who were christened with such a moniker, most likely after their striker Dion Dublin.

Konami seemed to have realised how silly it was naming a football club after a player, however, so in latter PES editions, Aston Villa were given names such as West Midlands Village.

  • Robert Lewandowski Bayern Munich 2018-19

    Rekordmeister | Bayern

PES' relationship with Bayern Munich has certainly been a trying one, with the German side having been given a number of nicknames – and at one point being removed from the game entirely. One of the most famous names, however, was "Rekordmeister", which means "The Record Champions".

It was a no-hassle name given to the German giants, though a new partnership with the Bundesliga winners and PES 2020 was recently announced.

  • West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble

    Lake District | West Ham

When you think of Lake District, you'd think of the mountainous region in North West England that is home to... a whole lot of lakes, and not West Ham United.

West Ham have gone through a lot of name iterations in PES editions, but certainly the most amusing is their "Lake District" moniker. Over the years, they've been renamed to something more geographically sensible and accurate, such as simply "East London".

  • PES 2018

    PM Black White | Juventus

Behold, before PES acquired the naming rights for Juventus, their previous name for the Serie A champions was... "PM Black White". Extremely imaginative!
  • PES 2018

    MD White | Real Madrid

Much like Juventus, Konami were extremely creative in their moniker for Real Madrid, going with "MD White".

Real Madrid were the highest-profile Spanish side requiring a name edit in PES 2018, with the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid having been licensed for the game.

  • Paul Pogba Manchester United

    Aragon | Manchester United

No, it's not a reference to Aragorn, King of Gondor in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Aragon is a region in Spain, as well as the name of a 19th-century warship, and it's difficult to guess the logic behind naming one of England's most successful clubs after it in PES 2.

The name was quite short-lived in PES, but the later naming iterations of Man Utd in the game weren't much better – with Konami going for "Man Red" at one point.

  • David Silva Kevin De Bruyne Manchester City 2017-18

    Man Blue | Man City

If you have a Man Red for Man Utd... you have a Man Blue for Manchester City

Konami were fans of renaming teams based on their trademark colours, such as Hampshire Red for Southampton, Notts Reds for Nottingham Forest and South Yorkshire Blues for Sheffield Wednesday.

  • Didier Drogba Frank Lampard Chelsea

    West London Blue | Chelsea

Another pretty obvious and straightforward team name to describe the Stamford Bridge side. The extremely specific team name is to separate from other London sides such as North West London (Queens Park Rangers), North East London (Tottenham), South Norwood (Crystal Palace).

Chelsea, however, were also simply named London FC at one point.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson Richarlison Everton 2018-19

    Merseyside Blue | Everton

Another straightforward one. There was no need for a Merseyside Red for Everton's crosstown rivals, however, as Liverpool were licensed with PES.
  • Ziyech, Mazraoui - Ajax

    Museumplein | Ajax

This one is one of Konami's more creative efforts, with "Museumplein" being a public park and space in the centre of Amsterdam.

A popular and picturesque tourist spot, Museumplein is home to attractions such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum – as well as the concert hall Concertgebouw.

  • Steve Mounie, Huddersfield Town 2018-19

    West Yorkshire Town | Huddersfield

Konami didn't even try with renaming Huddersfield, simply naming them "West Yorkshire Town" in PES 2018.
  • Pontus Jansson Leeds

    Yorkshire Whites | Leeds

They'd already gone with West Yorkshire Town with Huddersfield, so they had to think outside of the box with naming the Leeds side for PES 2018.
  • Pablo Sarabia Sevilla

    AN White Red | Sevilla

While there was a bit of effort in naming England-based football teams based on their colour and geographical region, Konami didn't even try with Spanish teams.

They simply named the team based on their shirt colours and not much else: GA Blue Whites (Deportivo La Coruna), MD Blue White (Leganes), CT Blue White (Espanyol) and PV White Red (Athletic Bilbao).

  • Fraizer Campbell of Hull City

    Yorkshire Orange | Hull

PES games have a tendency to name their teams based on the county or region they are from, though with Hull, they've added the "Orange" to differentiate from, say, Yorkshire Blues.
  • Bojan Krkic Stoke City

    Stoke City | The Potteries

Stoke's official nickname is The Potters, so obviously their PES 2018 name was The Potteries. Go figure.
