Lobi Stars vs Sundowns
These are the few things the NPFL giants must do to avoid defeat against the South Africans in Pretoria

  • Gor Mahia strikers Jacques Tuyisenge and Francis Mustafa v Lobi Stars of Nigeria.

#1 Lobi Stars must show respect not fear

Although Mamelodi Sundowns have more pedigree in continental football, Lobi Stars must avoid the pitfall of exercising any form of fear for their hosts. While Lobi Stars are campaigning in the champions league only for the second time since their debut in 2000,  the Brazilians have made 12 appearances and have won the ultimate prize once in 2016 while also making it to the final in 2001. The fact that Pitso Mosimane’s men have won just once in their last four outings should spur on Nigeria’s flagbearers that they can get a good result in Pretoria.

  • Solomon Ogbeide

#2 Ogbeide’s men must avoid early goals

Lobi Stars already have a daunting task in Pretoria, and it could even get harder if they let in any early goal. The Nigerians must be at alert not to allow an early goal as mounting a fightback may be mission impossible against the Brazilians who are looking to seal their place in the quarter-final before the trip to north Africa to face Wydad Casablanca.

  • Lobi Stars, Samuel Mathias

#3 The Nigerians must play to their strength

If there is one edge Lobi Stars have over their hosts, it is in their height and physicality. To get a good result, coach Solomon Ogbeide must deplore the personnel at his disposal tactically. The gaffer should also start former Super Eagles defender Solomon Kwambe in a defensive midfield role instead of as a centre back where his lack of speed will not be exposed.

  • Francis Mustafa of Gor Mahia v Lobi Stars of Nigeria.

    #4 Avoid conceding penalties

Since Lobi Stars are a physical side, they must avoid as much as possible body contacts in the penalty area. They must avoid the mistake of Nigeria’s representative in the Caf Confederation Cup, Enugu Rangers who lost conceded a penalty to lose at home.

  • Lobi Stars

#5 Lobi must employ fast breaks

It is quite predictable that Sundowns will be going all out to get the goals that would give them victory over Lobi Stars. That may work in favour of the Nigerians if the pacey players in Solomon Ogbeide's team try the fast breaks. Yaya Kone who scored one of the goals in the reverse leg in Enugu can get one again for the Pride of Benue if they get their tactics right against the Brazilians on Saturday.
