Bafana opened their Group D campaign with a defeat, and Goal looks at how the players fared

  • Bafana Bafana, Ronwen Williams

    #1 Ronwen Williams

8/10 - The keeper was a surprise inclusion in Stuart Baxter's Bafana Bafana squad.

However, he earned his stripes with two notable saves, one from Jonathan Kodjia from close range and another late on when he kept out Nicolas Pepe's freekick.

  • Bafana Bafana, Thamsanqa Mkhize

    #2 Thamsanqa Mkhize

7/10 - The full-back was phenomenal down the right and side defensively but struggled to create much going forward.
  • Jonathan Kodjia, Ivory Coast & Thulani Hlatshwayo, South Africa, June 2019

    #3 Thulani Hlatshwayo

7/10 - Much was expected from the Bafana captain, but aside from a header which flew agonisingly wide in the first half, he was quiet.

Defensively, the only time he was split from his partner was when Bafana conceded.

  • Buhle Mkhwanazi, South Africa, October 2018

    #4 Buhle Mkhwanazi

7/10 - Partnered Hlatshwayo at the back. He was a towering presence in defence and he didn't allow Ivory Coast to dominate the physical challenges.
  • Sifisio Hlanti Bafana Bafana v Libya, September 2018

    #5 Sifiso hlanti

7/10 - Looked promising but struggled going forward and was often disposed of the ball. Kodjia also gave him sleepless nights early on as he drifted wide on a number of occasions to isolate the full-back.
  • Tiyani Mabunda and Lebohang Maboe, Bafana Bafana

    #6 Lebohang Maboe

5/10 - Was deployed in midfield, a role he is no longer accustomed to playing. Maboe was completely isolated and offered little to nothing going forward.
  • Dean Furman Bafana Bafana v Libya, September 2018

    #7 Dean Furman

6/10 - Bafana's destroyer in the middle of the park. Although, he was a rock in midfield, a lapse in concentration saw him and his teammates punished as Bafana were edged out.
  • Bafana Bafana, Kamohelo Mokotjo

    #8 Kamohelo Mokotjo

6/10 - Once again failed to live up to expectations as he, along with Furman, cancelled each other out due to their similar style of play.
  • Max Gradel Ivory Coast Themba Zwane South Africa

    #9 Themba Zwane

6/10 - The Sundowns forward was supposed to be Bafana's creative mastermind, but he was unable to have an effect on the game and was well marshalled by the Ivorian's defence.
  • Lebogang Mothiba, South Africa

    #10 Lebo Mothiba

5/10 - Isolated and saw little of the ball. He could not make his physical presence heard upfront as the gap between him and Percy Tau was too big.
  • Percy Tau, Bafana Bafana, March 2019

    #11 Percy Tau

5/10 - Despite being the top scorer in qualification, Tau did not look all too comfortable. His counter-attacking game was kept at bay by a resilient Ivory Coast defence, but most importantly, he was never given space or allowed to run at the opposition defence, which saw his threat contained.
  • South Africa, Sibusiso Vilakazi against Senegal

    #12 Sibusiso Vilakazi

6/10 - He was introduced late on in order to change the game, and while he looked promising he was unable to muster and clear cut opportunities.
  • Lars Veldwijk

    #13 Lars Veldwijk

Was introduced with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game and thus could not be rated.
