Mohamed Salah of Egypt challenged by Kamohelo Mokotjo of South Africa, July 2019
South Africa shocked the hosts on Saturday night, and Goal looks at some of the stats and facts from the match

  • Egypt v South Africa Thembinkosi Lorch and Mohamed El-Shenawy - July 2019

    Positive Bafana

After scoring just a solitary goal in the group stage and failing to register a single shot on target against both Ivory Coast and Morocco, change was demanded and Bafana heeded the call.

They took the game to Egypt and had a total of six shots on the target making Pharaohs' No.1 Mohamed El-Shenawy the busier of the two keepers on show as he made five saves.

  • Egypt v South Africa Mohamed Salah, Dean Furman and Kamohelo Mokotjo - July 2019

    Greater hunger

Bafana Bafana certainly wanted the game more.

While they did not have the bulk of possession they enjoyed a tackle success of 89% and committed a whopping 20 fouls in the process.

  • Egypt v South Africa Mahmoud Hassan 'Trezeguet' - July 2019

    Egypt dominate possession

The Egyptians enjoyed the majority of possession, boasting 62.5% of the ball compared to Bafana's meagre 37.5%.

They also had more successful touches [646] than their opponents as they registered an 80% touch success.

  • Egypt v South Africa Kamohelo Mokotjo, Percy Tau and Thembinkosi Lorch - July 2019

    Both teams utilise long balls

It was clear that both teams were keen to use the long ball and pace up front to their advantage.

Egypt made 62 long balls while Bafana played 61 balls in search of Thembinkosi Lorch and Percy Tau.

  • Egypt v South Africa Ahmed Hegazi and Percy Tau - July 2019

    Hegazi the pass master

No player on the field made more successful passes than Egypt's Ahmed Hegazi, who completed 65 passes.

Bafana's best passer was Kamohelo Mokotjo with 30 successful passes.

  • Egypt v South Africa Ronwen Williams - July 2019

    Williams' distribution a worry

Although Bafana keeper Ronwen Williams was not tested as much having made three saves, a worrying factor was his distribution.

Williams made an unimpressive 19 unsuccessful passes - more than anyone on the field.

  • Egypt v South Africa Lebo Mothiba - July 2019

    Bafana play to their strengths

Fans were crying out for a Bafana team which plays with a lot more flair and that is what they got.

Four players - Furman, Mokotjo, Lebo Mothiba and Lorch - all had a 100% dribble success.
