‘We knew what was at stake’ - Alalade savours Enyimba’s away win over Djoliba

Enyimba striker Wasiu Alalade has expressed delight in his side’s 1-0 away victory over Djoliba in Sunday’s Caf  Confederation Cup at the Modibo Keita Stadium.

Prior to Sunday’s tie, the People Elephants were smarting from their 2-0 loss to Williamsville at the Robert Champroux Stadium, Abidjan two weeks ago and needed at least a point to keep their dreams of reaching the knockout stages alive in Bamako.

And it was Farouk Mohammed’s strike from the spot at the death against the Malians that inspired the Usman Abdullah’s men to their first away win in this year’s competition.

After the victory, the former ABS man attributes the feat to his mates’ determination to ensure the club’s progression, while assuring victory against CARA Brazzaville in Aba on August 28.

“I’m very delighted with our victory and pleased our mission was accomplished,” Alalade told Goal.

“We had to motivate ourselves because we knew what is at stake. As players, this game is very important to us and part of our life. I think our prayers and dedication really helped us a lot.

“As usual the management and government encouraged us that we can do it. I must admit that they [Djoliba] are good as well and are the oldest club in Mali but you know in game of football is either about winning, draw or lose.

“Certainly, one thing must happen, but to me, the better side won the game and we don't have anything on our mind than to defeat them [CARA Brazzaville] in Nigeria. We can assure everyone that we going to win.”

As it stands, Enyimba are now second on the log with nine points - behind leaders and next opponent, CARA Brazzaville on inferior goal difference on the Group C log after five matches.
