The 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup is finally underway, promising high drama and unforgettable moments on the pitch. Australia, the most decorated team in the tournament’s history with seven titles, are determined to defend their crown. But all eyes are on hosts India, riding a wave of form and desperate to clinch their first-ever World Cup triumph in front of a home crowd.
Aussie captain Alyssa Healy’s team is packed with the world’s top batters, bowlers and all-rounders and will be the favourite to defend the title they won in South Africa in 2022. They beat England by 71 runs as Healy scored a mammoth 170 runs during the match.
Host India came close to lifting their first World Cup trophy in 2017, but they lost the final to England, and will look to go one better on home turf. Luckily, India has the world’s best batter in their captain, Smriti Mandhana, as well as some in-form bowlers and all-rounders. They have won 10 of their last 14 ODIs, including three against higher-ranked opponents.
The tournament begins on September 30th and lasts through the entire month of October. The top four teams at the end of the group stage will qualify for the semifinals on 29th and 30th October, with the final taking place on November 2nd. For Cricket newbies, matches are 50 overs per side, with each team playing the other once in the initial round-robin group stage. The top four progress to the semi-finals, with the group-stage leader playing the team which finished fourth and second and third playing against each other.
