The U-18 youth league clash between arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan which was held at the East Bengal ground saw fans of both clubs clash after the match.

A first-half goal from midfielder Lalthankhuma Duhvela helped Mohun Bagan clinch the tie 1-0 and move up to the top of the Kolkata group table overtaking East Bengal and United Sports Club.

Tempers started flaring at halftime when a section of East Bengal fans attacked journalists at the gallery. Match Commissioner Aparup Chakraborty and some police officials had to intervene and bring the hostile situation on the ground under control.

The drama continued after the game when a set of East Bengal fans assaulted the away supporters on their way home. At least five Green and Maroon fans were injured after the clash.

Before the match, East Bengal had organised a joint press conference with Mohun Bagan where they had urged the fans to conduct themselves properly and not to indulge in violence.

After the match, a senior official of East Bengal said, “The law and order are of course not in our hands and we had requested the authorities to help us control unwanted situations. We had conducted a joint press conference as well. Our General Secretary was also present at that press conference. I hope the people who conducted unlawfully gets identified and proper legal actions are taken against them. The club is not in favour of those fans and we do not advocate such indecent behaviour.”

Earlier on October 26 in the first leg, Mohun Bagan fans had similarly attacked the visiting East Bengal fans and a female fan was heckled at the Bagan gallery.
