Sofapaka coach explains the exit of Wesley Onguso

Defender Wesley Onguso shocked many after making an unpredictable move from Sofapaka to Gor Mahia last month.

The former Western Stima man had a good run with the Harambee Stars, helping them to win Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, but within a split of a second he had ditched the 2009 league champions for K'Ogalo.

Reports indicated that the left back was not impressed with the way he was treated by head coach Sam Ssimbwa, prompting him to seek for refuge elsewhere.

However, when reached for comment, the Ugandan tactician has denied any fall out with Onguso saying he did his level best to help him improve. “Why should I hate or fall out with a player? I am a coach and my aim is to help build a player, not to fail him.

“At some point Onguso's form was wanting and as a coach I called him, explained to him what is happening and asked him to up his game. Maybe he had not adapted to our style of play, something that happens sometimes for players.

“When the season ended I was honest with him, I remember telling him it was a hard year in the club level but that will change in 2018. I had nothing personal with him," Ssimbwa told Goal.

The release of Onguso means Willis Ochieng will be used on most occasions in that position.
