Should Joel Obi go to the World Cup?

Nigeria fans are torn on whether the midfielder has done enough to make the Nigeria squad to Russia.

A recent Twitter poll reveals that Nigeria fans are torn on whether Torino midfielder Joel Obi should make the Super Eagles’ World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old was brought in from the cold by Gernot Rohr ahead of the recent international window, having not previously featured for the national side since 2014.

It was a valuable opportunity for the dynamic midfielder to demonstrate both that the had overcome the injury problems that had long affected his career, and that he had a role to play in Rohr’s Eagles selection.

Obi’s ability with the ball at feet could, in theory, make him an able understudy to John Obi Mikel, while his versatility may ensure he’s a valuable asset for the West Africans in a tournament environment.

In the victory over Poland, and the defeat by Serbia, Obi was given ample opportunity to impress—starting both matches—but did he do enough to guarantee a place for himself in the Eagles’ squad?

Nigeria supporters are unconvinced.

In a recent Twitter poll, 52% of respondents voted that they’d take Obi to Russia, narrowly edging ahead of a minority of 48% who believe the midfielder shouldn’t travel.

It’s a narrow show of support for Obi, but is hardly an overwhelming show of faith in his abilities.

Indeed, it remains to be seen whether the talented playmaker has done enough to convince Rohr of his merits after the two friendly outings.
