The Malaysian FA (FAM) has announced the preliminary training camp list for Malaysia U-19, ahead of the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship this October.

The training camp will begin this August 25 at the FAM headquarters in Kelana Jaya, before a 24-player list is selected. The team then flies off to Muscat, Oman on September 1 to play in three friendly matches, before returning to Malaysia on September 10. The AFC tournament will kick off on October 18 in Indonesia.

The preliminary list comprises 26 players, as well as 12 players on standby.

Strangely enough, the list seems to be missing two key players, while two more have only been placed in the standby list by head coach Bojan Hodak.

Mercurial winger Akhyar Rashid and midfielder Nik Akif Nik Syahiran's names are not in the list, while striker Hadi Fayyadh Abdul Razak and centre back Shivan Pillay Asokan are only in the backup list.

The quartet have been instrumental in the Young Tigers' AFF U-19 Youth Championship campaign back in July, in which they captured the title for the first time ever. Akhyar, Akif and Hadi are currently back in Indonesia again, playing in the Asian Games for Malaysia U-23.

A source close to FAM has a probable explanation, when contacted by Goal.

The source posited that Akhyar and Akif's names are probably missing because their clubs may need their services for the final stages of the Malaysia Cup after the Asian Games' end. The dates of the Malaysia Cup knockout stage fixtures have not been announced, but the final match should be held sometime in late September, considering that the group stage is currently at its midway point.

Judging from this, the four players may join up Hodak's camp one or two weeks before the AFC tournament began, before he finalises the 23-player squad.

This has been confirmed by Malaysia U-19 assistant head coach Hairuddin Omar to Goal.

"Hodak called up the new faces because they have shown potential in the Youth Cup and President's Cup (Malaysia's U-19 and U-23 domestic competitions).

"Guys like Akhyar, Akif, Shivan, Thivan (Thivandaran Karnan), Nurfais [Johari] are with their clubs or Malaysia U-23 at the moment, so we let them focus there for now."
