Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has hit out at Bidvest Wits mentor Gavin Hunt for suggesting that his side could potentially decide who will win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title this season.
The Students, who are the defending league champions, have failed to replicate their form of last season, and rather than challenging for league honours this season, they are currently embroiled in a relegation dogfight.
However, with games against several of the title chasing pack which include sides such as Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns, Hunt previously stated that his side could be potential ‘kingmakers’.
Nonetheless, the Sundowns coach has taken exception to his opposite number’s utterances, revealing that the league title is the Brazilians' to lose.
“The league is ours to lose,” Mosimane was quoted as saying by The Star.
“We need to try and maintain our position. We have to manage everyone around us. We had to manage Chiefs and Cape Town City. Free State Stars are closer to us and they are our next game. We have to manage them, but while you manage those, there are people who are coming up.” He explained.
“Suddenly Free State Stars are second on the log. Suddenly Orlando Pirates are second on the log. Suddenly Chiefs are second on the log. You’ve got to be smart and box cleverly,” he added.
The 53-year-old mentor further states that Hunt should instead concentrate on ensuring that Wits avoid relegation.
“You also have those who are at the bottom of the log, like Wits, who can only destabilise teams (fighting for the championship) a little bit, but they are not doing it for us. Nobody has the key to the league. Don’t listen to people [who] say, ‘I will determine who will win the league’,” he said.
"No! You are fighting to avoid relegation, my friend. Sort your team out. If you don’t win you are going down. At this point in time, nobody is doing anyone [any] favours. Everyone has something that they are fighting for,” he expressed.
