The former striker was a rank outsider this morning but has since been well backed and is odds-on to succeed Jose Mourinho as Red Devils manager

The volatility of next manager markets has once again been proven as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been backed in to 17/20 (1.85) favourite with 888Sport to take over at Manchester United.

Just hours ago, Laurent Blanc was 8/13 (1.62) in the betting but the Frenchman has since drifted to 5/1 (6.0) amidst reports that the United hierarchy will look outside the club for Jose Mourinho’s temporary successor.

That hasn’t stopped backers, though, with current Molde manager Solskjaer moving in from 33/1 (34.0) to just 17/20 (1.85) to take over at his former club.

The Norwegian scored 91 goals across his 11 years at Old Trafford including the stoppage time winner in the 1999 Champions League final, and a return to his old stomping ground would surely be welcomed by fans.

Solskjaer previously managed Manchester United reserves after retiring at the age of 34 and then moved to Molde, the team where he started his playing career, to take over as manager there.

A successful spell there prompted Cardiff City to hire him but he was unable to save the Bluebirds from relegation, returning to Molde after just eight months in south Wales.

He leads 5/1 (6.0) Blanc in the betting, with interest in the former Paris Saint-Germain manager appearing to wane amongst bettors.

Zinedine Zidane is available at 6/1 (7.0) but it seems more likely that he would prefer to take over the role on a permanent basis next season, rather than on as a temporary solution as United are searching for.

Indeed, United's statement on Tuesday morning said: “A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

The recently retired Michael Carrick, who has taken charge of the team for at least the next few days, can be backed at 11/1 (12.0).
