Rashid Achesa has taken over as the new Sports and Heritage Cabinet Secretary.
Achesa took over the Ministry on Friday after he was given the nod by the National Assembly following his nomination by President Uhuru Kenyatta last month.
Achesa, a former boxer and casual laborer replaced Hassan Wario, who left the Sports Ministry after a turbulent reign during which the country missed a chance to host the 2018 Chan Championship and the Rio Olympic scandal where a big portion of Team Kenya’Sh600 million budget was alleged to have been misappropriated.
But a local Sports Federation, Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) has threatened to move to a Court of Law to challenge Achesa’s appointment.
BAK chairman, John Kameta is accusing the newly appointed CS of giving out false information during the vetting process before the Public Appointment Committee last week.
“He (Achesa) lied to the nation that he once served as a BAK patron in the Western Kenya region. That is a hoax and for that reason, I will be moving to court to challenge his appointment," Kameta told Goal.
Achesa has promised to establish Sports Academies in each of the 47 Counties besides seeing the construction of Stadia in the country.
It will be interesting to see how Achesa handles Harambee Stars preparation for the forthcoming Africa Nations Qualifiers against Ghana on March 23.
