However, Real have now updated their website to reveal that Modric, 31, has inherited James' shirt, leaving behind his number 19 jersey.

The likes of Robinho and Mesut Ozil have donned the Real number 10 jersey in recent years with Modric the latest beneficiary of the lucrative number.

Real's website also confirms that new boy Dani Ceballos has been handed the number 24 shirt following his summer move from Real Betis.

Modric, 31, has sparkled since moving to Real from Tottenham in 2012, helping the club claim one La Liga crown as well as three Champions League trophies.

Colombia international James has reunited with his former Real boss Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern as he looks to rejuvenate his career after falling down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu.
