Argentina needed goals in their do-or-die clash against Nigeria, but most importantly they needed Messi to come to the party and he did just that

Big-name players are always expected to rise to the occasion whenever their teams need them the most, and this is what the world witnessed of Lionel Messi against Nigeria

Argentina went into that encounter knowing that anything less than the three points would see them crash out of the tournament.

Having reached the final of the previous global showpiece, the Argentines were under immense pressure to avoid falling at the group stages.

While Messi is renowned for scoring special goals, this strike against the Super Eagles was nothing short of quality from a top player.

Messi managed to lose his marker and get behind the Nigeria defence while everyone was concentrating on the ball in the middle of the park.

It took the Barcelona superstar two touches to set himself up, before firing past the goalkeeper.

The strike was even made sweeter by the fact that Messi scored with his weaker foot to send the Argentina fans inside the venue wild.

Messi controlled the ball with his left thigh, pushed it with his left foot before it touched the ground to ensure that no one catches him as he was running at high speed towards the Nigerian goal.

The finishing was exquisite, and one could see what it meant even for the player himself as he ran to the corner flag to celebrate with his teammates.
