Kenyan trio progress to second phase of Caf Confederation Cup

Kenyan international trio of Jesse Were, Anthony Akumu and David Owino have progressed to second phase of Caf Confederation Cup with Zesco United after Caf confirmed the Zambian giants as Group C leaders.

Zesco were scheduled to play Sudanese side, Al Hilal El Obied on Sunday, July 9, 2017, in the final Group C match that would have determined the group leader only for the match to be cancelled by Caf following a Fifa ban on Sudan FA.

As a result, Zesco United were handed a walkover and the Zambian giants will now take on South African side, SuperSport United on the weekend of September 8.

“Caf has sent us communication regarding the situation in our group. We have been confirmed as group winners and we will face SuperSport United,” read a statement from Zesco United.

In a letter to Zesco FC, Caf awarded the Zambians three points following the disqualification of Obied, pushing them top of the group on 10 points from six matches, having won three and lost two.

“If a team withdraws after participating in all the matches in the first half of the group matches, the remaining matches to be played in the same group are lost by penalty, three goals to nil,” read part of Caf communiqué.

“Hence the only remaining match to be played between Zesco and Al Hilal El Obied is considered lost 3-0 in favour of its opponents, Zesco FC.”

Were scored in Zesco’s 1-1 draw against Smouha SC last weekend.
