Juventus were right to sell Leonardo Bonucci in order to restore harmony within the dressing room, believes former forward Paolo Di Canio.
AC Milan completed the shock €42 million signing of Bonucci on Friday in a deal that has infuriated many Bianconeri fans.
But Di Canio believes that Juventus were forced to take the decision following the much-publicised falling-out between the defender and coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Juventus right to sell Bonucci but Milan can’t win Scudetto – ...
Paolo Di Canio doesn't think AC Milan can win Serie A even with Bonucci!Posted by Goal.com on Saturday, 15 July 2017
“Was I surprised by the transfer? In some ways, yes. In some ways, no, because obviously what happened last season to Bonucci with the manager and with the club – at a club like Juventus this can’t happen,” Di Canio told Goal.
“They can sacrifice even the top footballer because they want a very nice atmosphere. They want a team that stays together, a unit.
“You can have some problems sometimes but if the problem is big, then you can sacrifice any player. This year was the right time [to leave] for Bonucci and for the club, but I was surprised that he ended up at AC Milan.”
AC Milan’s new Chinese owners have been splashing the cash in the transfer market this summer and will soon break the €200m mark for money spent.
Andre Silva, Franck Kessie, Matteo Musacchio, Hakan Calhanoglu, Andrea Conti, Ricardo Rodriguez and Bonucci have already arrived, while Lucas Biglia will complete a move from Lazio in the coming days.
With all these new signings, can Milan win the Scudetto this coming season?
“No, because they have brought in one top player who has won trophies, Bonucci, but the others are not winning players,” said Di Canio. “They are good players but they haven’t won at the top level.
“Also, when you make a revolution, it takes time. It will be a very big surprise if AC Milan win the league straight away but everything is possible in football – especially as Serie A is not a top league.”
