Jorge Villafana added to U.S. roster for January camp

Santos Laguna defender Jorge Villafana has been added to the U.S. national team roster ahead of friendlies against Serbia and Jamaica, U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday.

It's the first call-up for Villafana, who has made 26 Liga MX appearances since signing with Santos Laguna in December 2015. The left back has been an unused substitute for the club's first three matches of the Clausura campaign, though he has started a pair of Copa MX matches.

Villafana made 146 MLS appearances from 2007 to 2015 while playing for Chivas USA and the Portland Timbers, starting six playoff games as the Timbers won the 2015 MLS Cup title.

A former U.S. Under-23 international, Villafana joins DaMarcus Beasley, Greg Garza and Taylor Kemp as left backs on U.S. coach Bruce Arena's 29-man roster.

The U.S. faces Serbia on Sunday in San Diego before meeting Jamaica on Feb. 3 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
