Over the years, the Amakhosi have developed a knack for signing free agents and most recently captured the signing of former Cape Town City winger Bhongolwethu Jayiya, on a free.
However, despite bolstering the squad with a notable addition, the Soweto giants came under criticism for not spending big. But Chiefs’ coach Steve Komphela has defended the club’s approach in the transfer window. Komphela maintains that while a player may be free, it does not mean he isn’t a quality player.
"The transfer market is awkward, it needs an in-depth analysis," Komphela told SuperSport TV after their Maize Cup semi-final win.
"There is a player who played in the German team that won the Confederations Cup, (Sebastian Rudy), he's going to Bayern (Munich) for free, it doesn't mean that player isn't good.
"The rules of the game and transfer market dictate that the contract has come to an end, you can go for them," Komphela concluded.
