The West Ham midfielder was left out of the Three Lions' World Cup squad but remains hopeful of playing for the national team again

Jack Wilshere has admitted that Gareth Southgate has not spoken to him since leaving him out of England's World Cup squad in the summer.

The West Ham midfielder previously expressed his disappointment about missing out on England’s campaign in Russia,  saying, “I’ve felt fit, sharp and strong all season and believe I should be in the squad!”

Four months on from the end of the tournament and Wilshere still has not heard from the Three Lions manager about his international future.

The 26-year-old has not played for England since the Euro 2016 defeat against Iceland but he is willing to fight to earn his spot once again.

“No, I haven’t heard from [Southgate],” Wilshere told BT Sport .

“But as a footballer and as an English player playing in England, the day that you say you don’t want to play for your national team or give up, is the day you should really give up playing football.”

Wilshere has had multiple speedbumps in his career due to injury. The midfielder turns 27 in January and, despite being touted as a top talent from a young age, he has only earned 34 caps during his eight-year international career.

The injury-prone star has also only made 70 Premier League appearances since 2014 but he still believes that he is good enough to play for England when he is fit.

“Whenever I’m fit and playing in the Premier League, I’ve always said to everyone that I believe in my own ability,” he added, having joined West Ham in the summer after his Arsenal contract expired.

“Sometimes players go through tough times, injuries and stuff, but I always believe in my abilities.

“When I get back I’m looking to give my best performances - and you never know then.”

Wilshere was unavailable for selection for the upcoming games against the U.S. national team and Croatia due to injury. However, with the young crop of midfield talent coming through he may find it hard to get into the squad.
