Ghana coach Bashir Hayford has expressed disappointment by his side's profligacy in the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations opener against Algeria on Saturday.
The Black Queens scored early through Gladys Amfobea in the 13th minute, but that was followed by a flurry of wasted opportunities, the side just claiming all three points at the Accra Sports Stadium on a 1-0 score.
"They say man proposes but God disposes. We anticipated a lot but God knows that only one goal is better for us," Hayford said at the post-match conference.
"We fought very hard. The opposition wasn't easy but we managed to pin them down, only that we squandered a number of chances.
"That's why I say it's only God who knows what is better for his children. That one goal was what we carried to the end of the game and we thank God for that.
"I don't think we struggled. The only thing is that we squandered a number of chances. And that is what we're going to work on.
"We played all the ball, the chances came but we wastes them. We should have scored about five goals."
Algeria coach Radia Fertoul, on her part, praised her team's fighting spirit in the face of such a big battle against an opposition backed by a home crowd.
"We had a very difficult game," Fertoul said.
"We began not so good but progressed along the line. We tried to create opportunities.
"They scored early in the 13th minute and the crowd were very hostile to us.
"We congratulate our players for the good game and the good spirit. They had good courage and they came through.
"We tried our best to play and equalize but we went down. We also congratulate Ghana for a very good game.
"We're wounded and our next game is against Cameroon. We're going to try our best to improve."
Ghana face Mali in their next game on Tuesday while Algeria play Cameroon.
