Bernabeu, who served for the Camp Nou club during Josep Lluis Nunez’s tenure as president of Barcelona, is also the grandfather to Barcs defender Gerard Pique. And the former director and vice-president has praised his grandson’s contribution in the victory over United at Wembley.

“It was a sensational match for Barcelona, the fans and for Gerard, who had a wonderful game,” said Bernabeu.

"We have a wonderful team. We won a European Cup here [at Wembley in 1992] and repeated the story today. Congratulations to all the Barcelona and Spanish fans who supports us."

Barcelona's fourth Champions League/European Cup win, along with Real Madrid's nine have allowed Spain to overtake Italy to become the country with the most titles in Europe's premier club competition.
