The People’s Elephant skipper is confident that they will give a good representation in Bamako in this weekend's Caf Cup game

Enyimba’s Mfon Udoh has asserted that they are aware that they are carrying the hope and aspirations of Nigerians as they do battle with Djoliba of Mali this weekend in the Caf Confederation Cup.

He said they are willing to rewrite history in favour of Nigeria to ensure that there is something to cheer about in the light of the nation’s clubs’ unimpressive outing on the continent in recent times.

The skipper noted that he is aware that Nigeria could lose a slot each in the Caf Confederation Cup and the Caf Champions League competitions next year because of the country’s representatives’ erratic showing in Africa and that they are going to do their bit to halt that.

“We know what we are expected of and we shall get down to work as soon as we hit Bamako on Friday,” Udoh told Goal.

“We are aware there are a lot on our shoulders. We are the only remaining club on the continent and with the fear that our slot might be slashed on the continent as from next year we are doing everything within our limit to ensure that we make Nigerians proud.

“We are approaching this game with all seriousness and determination. We played against them in Calabar and we know it will be another different ball game in Bamako. We are well focused on the game and we want to return home with a positive result.

“They were a tough side in Calabar and they will even be tougher in front of their fans. We shall approach the game very cautiously and we will hope for the best at the end of the match. We won’t allow anything to intimidate us there.”

Sharing his experience in their last visit to Bamako in 2014 Udoh stressed that the fans of AS Real de Bamako were hostile to them before the start of the game but that they still left Mali with a 1-0 win.

“It was a difficult game for us back then because the atmosphere was very charged before the start of the game but this didn’t stop us from winning 1-0,” he continued.

“We were still eliminated back then because we already lost the first leg at home 2-1 and despite the 1-0 away win we bowed out on the away goals rule. We want to have sweet memories this term.”
