D.C. United signs Venezuela national team midfielder Moreno

The 24-year-old midfielder signs from his home country on a permanent deal, continuing the rebuild for the MLS side

D.C. United has signed Venezuela international Junior Moreno, the MLS side confirmed Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though D.C. announced the midfielder is joining from Zulia FC on a permanent basis.

“Junior has established himself in the Venezuelan national team because of his physical presence and ability to connect the game in the midfield,”  D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. “He is adept at reading the game, making quick transitions on both sides of the ball, and he will provide us with tactical flexibility with his ability to play both holding and central box-to-box midfield positions. Junior is arriving at a great age with international experience in both World Cup qualification and the Copa Libertadores, and we look forward to his future with our club."

The 24-year-old has featured for Zulia, a side in Venezuela's top division, for three seasons and was the club captain. He played six games in the Copa Libertadores in 2017. Zulia finished second in Venzeuala in 2016 and won the Copa Venezuela the same season.

Prior to his time with Zulia, he played three seasons with Deportivo Lara, where he made his professional debut in 2012.

Moreno has also earned five caps for the Venezuela national team, with three coming in World Cup qualification. Two of those three appearances were starts.

The midfielder joins a growing presence of Venezuela internationals in MLS. Striker Josef Martinez enjoyed an excellent debut season in 2017 with Atlanta United, while midfielder Yangel Herrera impressed for New York City FC. Atlanta also acquired 20-year-old left back Jose Hernandez from Caracas FC in December.
