Second string City stars look to impress in Europe ahead of Sunday’s Manchester Derby

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City

Metalist Oblast Sports Complex

6 December 2017

Kickoff 21:45 (CAT)

Having already won the group, Manchester City are likely to make wholesale changes to the side that travels to Shakhtar Donetsk tonight in the Champions League. In order to guarantee qualification without relying on other results, Shakhtar need a point in this decisive clash.

With a Manchester Derby on the horizon, Pep Guardiola will bring in a couple of fringe names for a match that City don’t need to win, although the incentive is there for Ukrainian outfit Donetsk to get a point that would guarantee their passage and City will want to go into the weekend off the back of a win. In Group F’s other clash, Napoli travel to Feyenoord knowing that a win would secure their passage should City beat Donetsk.

Taison is an injury doubt for Shakhtar and talismanic skipper Darijo Srna, is suspended. City’s key creative man, Kevin De Bruyne, also misses out through suspension.

In the race for second place in Group F, much will depend on Manchester City’s team selection and performance levels before a crucial domestic challenge just four days away. City have now won a record-equalling 13 league matches in a row, including 4 consecutive wins by a single goal. Shakhtar will hope that Guardiola’s in-form side will have one eye on the imminent Manchester Derby in Ukraine tonight.
