Our tipster thinks that it will be a tight tussle in Sochi when the Socceroos, still dreaming of a last 16 place, go head-to-head with Los Incas

Australia must beat Peru in their final group game if they are to stand any chance of reaching the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 2006.

The Socceroos came from behind to pick up a precious point against Denmark on Thursday and Bert van Marwijk's men must beat Ricardo Gareca's side and hope that France beat Denmark in Moscow.

Peru have won their fair share of plaudits at this tournament, with the South Americans showing ambition aplenty in front of a huge, passionate travelling support.

Gareca's men, though, have no points and no goals to show for their efforts thus far following back-to-back 1-0 defeats against Denmark and France, respectively.

Latest odds

Peru are chalked up as a 29/20 (2.45) chance with bet365 to claim their first World Cup finals win in 40 years, while the same firm go 5/2 (3.50) that this match ends in stalemate.

A point will not suffice for the Socceroos and bet365 go 2/1 (3.0) that Australia fulfil their end of the equation by securing all three points in Sochi.

Team news

Andrew Nabbout dislocated his shoulder against the Danes and will likely sit out of the remainder of the Socceroos' campaign - despite the 25-year-old insisting that he will be fit to start against Los Incas.

Instead, Tomi Juric looks most likely to lead the line, but Daniel Arzani - the youngest man in the competition - is pushing for a place in the starting line-up.

Peru's all-time leading marksman, Paolo Guerrero, should start in what will surely be his final World Cup appearance for Los Incas.

A tight tussle?

Gareca's charges have drawn a blank in each of their last three outings and have failed to score in six of their last eight World Cup matches.

bet365 go 12/5 (3.40) that Peru are again unable to get on the scoresheet.

Prediction

Australia will certainly go for glory, but each of the Socceroos' last four competitive goals has come from the penalty spot and Van Marwijk's men may struggle to make their mark again on this occasion.

Neither side is particularly prolific and, so, bet365's 10/11 (1.91) quote, for either nation to fail to find the net could represent decent value ahead of Tuesday's tussle.
