Asamoah Gyan made a losing return to European football as his Kayserispor were thrashed 4 -1 by Galatasaray in the sides opening fixture of the 2017/2018 Super Lig campaign on Monday.

The 31-year-old ended a five-year absence from European football after he left English club Sunderland in 2012.

The Black Stars captain left the relegated Premier League side for Al Ain in the Arabian Gulf League.

He played four seasons at Al Ain before making a big money switch to Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League.

Gyan started alongside Turkish international Umut Bulut in Marius Sumudica’s 4-4-2 formation but were undone by a star-studded side which included African duo, Senegal’s Badou Ndiaye and Morocco’s Younes Belhanda.

He lasted 71 minutes before he was replaced by Congolese-born-Belgian Geoffrey Mujangi Bia.
