Players in top league have another reason to work hard on the pitch after Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (Sjak) launched Kenyan Premier League Player of the Month Award.
The association in partnership with betting company SportPesa will award a KPL player, who performs exemplary well in a given month in top tier league for 2015 season. The selected player will receive Sh50, 000, a personalized trophy and a 42 inch Smart Tv.
If two players tie, the panelists will refer to each player’s disciplinary record in the league in terms of yellow cards or red cards he received in that particular month to determine the winner. It is a move which KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier has hailed terming it as the best step forward.
Rachier told Goal after the launch, “This will definitely motivate the players and push them to work harder. It will increase level of competition which will eventually reflect in our league. It is a good move and I thank SportPesa and Sjak for this innovation.”
The selecting panel will consist of Kenyan sports journalists who are members of the Sjak and the selection will be based entirely on the overall performance and level of commitment from any given player to his team. March and April winners will be awarded this week.
