Tanzania champions Simba SC roar past Zanzibar's Jamhuri in Mapinduzi Cup

The win boosted Simba's hopes of reaching the knockout stage as they move second in the Group behind Kenya's Tusker whom they face on Friday

Mainland champions Simba SC outclassed Isles champions Jamhuri from Pemba 4-2 in the Mapinduzi Cup Group A match held at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Thursday.

The victory boosted Simba's hopes of reaching the knockout stage, putting them on second place in the Group behind Kenya's Tusker FC, who hammered Zanzibar's Bandari 5-1 in the curtain raiser.

Jamhuri were the first to take the lead in the 17th minute following a 17-metre thunderbolt from Mfanyeje Mussa that gave Simba’s goalkeeper William Mweta no chance.

Simba equalized in the 27th minute through Haruna Athumani Chanongo’s header following a superbly corner kick from midfielder Kiggi Makassy on the right.

The Msimbazi Street boys stepped on the pedal after the equaliser and it took them only two minutes to take the lead after Jamhuri’s goalie Jaffar Said failed to save a 20-metre shoot from Chanongo to make it double.

However, a few minutes before half time, Mussa also scored his second goal of the day and the equalizer for Jamhuri when he finished superbly a free-kick from Abdallah Athumani.

Simba were in front again after only 12 minutes of the second half after skipper Shomary Kapombe, playing as holding midfielder, registered the third goal for his side through a well taken free-kick from outside the penalty box.

Simba hammered the last nail in Jamhuri’s coffin in the 66th minute when Zambian striker Felix Sunzu scored the fourth for the Dar es Salaam based side.

Simba’s newly hired coach Frenchman Patrick Liewig watched the game from the stands. The team was led by the technical director Moses Basena and manager Jamhuri Kihwelo ‘Julio’.

On Friday, Tusker will clash against Simba in a match billed to be thrilling and tough. The brewers beat Simba 3-0 in a friendly match played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
