DSK Shivajians defeated Chennai City FC 2-0 in an I-League round three tie at the Shree Chhatrapati Balewadi Sports complex in Pune, on Tuesday 17th January 2017. A fine header from Seong-Yong Kim (30') and a Juan Quero (56') penalty helped them bag their first win of the campaign.
The home side made three changes to the team that lost to East Bengal. Centre-back Gouramangi Singh was replaced by Jerry Lalrinzuala, while Sanju Pradhan and Halicharan Narzary dropped to the bench so as to accomodate Rohit Kumar and Milan Singh.
Chennai City too made a fistful of changes with Shahan Lal Meloly incoming for Karanjit Singh while Zakeer Mundampara and Malsawm Fela started in place of Denson Devadas and Marcos Thank.
In a typical slow burning start, the first real chance of the match fell to Juan Quero, The Shivajians' skipper. The Spaniard curled an exquisite free-kick towards the top right-hand corner of the net. However, Meloly was on hand to palm away the effort for a corner, somewhat acrobatically.
However, Meloly's net would soon bulge, thanks to a combination of two DSK foreigners. Quero's delivery from a dead ball has been exquisite so far and so it was again so in the 30th minute. It was turned in by Kim Seong-Yong, with a well-timed header. Meloly was rooted to his spot as the Korean wheeled away in delight.
The score ended 1-0 in favour of the Shivajians at half-time.
The second-half immediately saw the Reds double their advantage. Kim Seong Yong was fouled in the box by Echezona in the 55th minute, who also fell afoul of the referee and went into his book. Juan Quero stepped up to gleefully convert the penalty, sending keeper Meloly the wrong way.
2-0 nearly became 3-0, when Milan Singh ripped into the Chennai City box and let fly a shot, aimed at the bottom corner of the net. However, Meloly got down well to save.
Despite making all three of their substitutions, The Yellow and Blacks looked capable of overhauling a two-goal deficit. The Shivajians, on the other hand, sat comfortably and broke with pace often. New signing Seityasen Singh was handed his debut by Dave Rogers as well.
The visitors' most memorable instance in the half came in the 87th minute, when Marcos Thank, a second half substitute, ran at goal and unleashed a tame shot, which missed the target.
The defeat means Chennai City are yet to notch their first ever I-League win while they are still to score a goal as well. DSK Shivajians will be glad to have won three points after suffering two disappointing results previously.
