Jamshedpur FC held ATK to a 0-0 draw in their first home match of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Friday.
Steve Coppell made three changes in the Jamshedpur FC starting XI. Andre Bikey was back in action after serving a one-match ban. Bikey replaced injured Anas Edathodika in the centre of defence. Trinidade Goncalves and Izu Azuka were replaced by Farukh Choudhary and Sameehg Doutie.
ATK saw two changes in their starting XI. Teddy Sheringham introduced Robin Singh in place of Njazi Kuqi and 42-year-old custodian Jussi Jääskeläinen replaced Debjit Majumder.
The away side looked more comfortable with the ball right from the beginning of the game. Teddy deployed Zequinha just behind Robin Singh and moved Hitesh Sharma to the flank. Zequinha brought more fluidity to the centre of the pitch as ATK created chances through the middle.
For the home side, Doutie operated just behind Farukh with Belfort and Jerry Mawihmingthanga on the flanks. Bikey was given the responsibility to mark Robin Singh. The two players were involved in quite a few tussles on the pitch.
ATK’s first proper chance came in the 32nd minute when Hitesh Sharma found the back of the net after Subrata Paul fumbled in front of the goal. Zequinha unleashed a shot at goal which tested Paul’s grip. Hitesh pounced on the rebound and tapped it into the net. Unfortunately, the linesman had signalled offside against the young attacker.
For Jamshedpur, Jerry missed three chances during the first half. His runs down the right side were impressive but none of his shots was on target.
Jamshedpur took control of the game in the second half and looked hungry for their maiden goal in the Indian Super League (ISL). Steve Coppell introduced Izu Azuka and Trinidade Goncalves quickly in the second half to increase the intensity of the team’s attacks. Bikash Jairu also came in which enhanced the home side’s flanks.
Teddy Sheringham brought in Njazi Kuqi in place of Zequinha. ATK then changed to a 4-4-2 with Kuqi playing alongside Robin Singh upfront.
Both the teams tried their best to break the deadlock but failed. While ATK dominated proceedings in the first 45 minutes, it was mostly Jamshedpur who dominated the second period. Jamshedpur FC are yet to score a goal after three matches in the ISL. They now have three points from three games. ATK, on the other hand, have two points from as many matches.
