Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
That win takes Chelsea top of the table for now, with Liverpool and Manchester City playing each other tomorrow. Next up for them is a trip to Brentford after the international break. Southampton are still looking for their first win of the season and face Leeds United in their next game.
Chelsea get back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Southampton. Chalobah scored a diving header just nine minutes in to break the deadlock and Werner thought he'd added a second, but it was ruled out by VAR. In the second half, Chilwell gave away a penalty which was slotted home by Ward-Prowse, who was then sent off 16 minutes later for a bad tackle on Jorginho. Werner tapped in from close range to restore the lead before Chilwell made up for giving away the spot-kick by scoring a great goal after Lukaku and Azpilicueta hit the woodwork.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: CHELSEA 3-1 SOUTHAMPTON.
M. Djenepo
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Djenepo is late getting across to Azpilicueta, and he clips his ankles to take his legs out from under him which earns him a late yellow card.
90' + 3' Still, Chelsea are keeping the ball and Southampton just can't get out of their own half. They're dropping deeper to try and close down the space, but the hosts are patiently working their way upfield.
M. Salisu
Yellow Card
90' + 1' Salisu catches Werner with a late challenge when he tries to stop his run down the right and he's shown a yellow card.
B. Chilwell
Goal
89' CHILWELL SCORES! Lukaku fires a shot on goal from close range that bounces off the post before Azpilicueta fires a shot against the crossbar. It falls to Chilwell on the left of the box, and it looks like McCarthy kept him out too, but he did so from behind the line. 3-1 Chelsea!
M. Elyounoussi
N. Redmond
87' Final change for Southampton now and it's Elyounoussi that's coming on for Redmond.
86' CHANCE! Chelsea are trying to wrap up the three points here and Lukaku peels off the back of Livramento on the edge of the box. The space opens up for him, so he drills the shot across goal, but it rolls wide of the far post.
Azpilicueta
Assist
84' Walker-Peters just didn't pick up Azpilicueta's run down the right and he has the space to put a dangerous cross into the six-yard box.
T. Werner
Goal
84' WERNER SCORES! He had one disallowed in the first half, but this one will count! Azpilicueta gets in behind Walker-Peters and squares the ball into the six-yard box. Southampton aren't alive to the danger and Werner is following in to tap it past McCarthy. 2-1 Chelsea!
R. Barkley
R. Loftus-Cheek
83' Final roll of the dice for Chelsea now as they try to find a late winner. Loftus-Cheek is taken off, with Barkley on to replace him.
81' SAVE! Chilwell touches the ball into Mount and he does well to hold off Romeu to get to the edge of the box. He's off-balance as he hits the shot so he can't get the power behind it and it's straight at McCarthy.
79' Chelsea are straight on the attack and they're trying to use their man advantage here. Loftus-Cheek lifts a deep cross into the box, with Lukaku hovering at the far post, but McCarthy comes off his line to collect it.
J. Ward-Prowse
Red Card
77' IT'S RED! After looking at the replays of Ward-Prowse's tackle, Martin Atkinson has gone back onto the pitch and shown the Southampton captain a straight red for serious foul play. He hands the armband over to Romeu, and the Saints are finishing this game with 10 men.
75' VAR is just having a look at a late tackle from Ward-Prowse which he was shown a yellow card for. From the replays, he didn't get anywhere near the ball, and he did catch Jorginho with his studs. The referee has been asked to go over to the monitor and have another look at this...
M. Djenepo
N. Tella
73' Southampton are making a change here as well, with Tella going off for Djenepo.
Jorginho
M. Kovačić
73' Second change for Chelsea now and it's Jorginho that's coming on for Kovacic.
72' GREAT SAVE! Werner keeps persisting and rides Bednarek's challenge to get into the middle of the box. McCarthy rushes off his line as he takes the shot, but gets a strong hand behind it to keep him out.
70' Walker-Peters squares the ball to the edge of the box, but there are two Southampton players waiting for it. Tella and Armstrong both try to hit the shot and it ends up rolling harmlessly back to Mendy.
68' Chelsea are patiently working their way upfield and Mount turns Diallo before knocking it out to Azpilicueta. He can't find the space for a cross though and only wins a throw-in.
66' CHANCE! It's a brilliant first-time cross into the middle from Mount on the right, but it's just behind Werner in the middle. Chilwell makes a late run onto it and hits the shot on the volley, but it hits Lukaku and bounces wide.
M. Mount
C. Hudson-Odoi
65' Chelsea are making their first change of the game now as Mount comes on to replace Hudson-Odoi.
63' BLOCK! Southampton break forward on the counter again and Armstrong isn't closed down as he runs into the box. He has support up with him but chooses to go for goal himself and Silva slides in to send it looping onto the roof of the net.
J. Ward-Prowse
Penalty Goal
61' WARD-PROWSE SCORES! The captain steps up to take the spot-kick and confidently fires them level! It's a good penalty from him as he gets a lot of power behind it and picks out the bottom-right corner. Mendy dived the wrong way and it's 1-1!
59' PENALTY TO SOUTHAMPTON! Livramento dummies left before running to the byline and Chilwell slides in to try and stop him. He misses the ball, completely taking out the right-back's legs and the referee points straight to the spot.
57' There are big shouts from the crowd for a penalty after Chilwell is clumsily brought down by Bednarek. It looks like a coming together more than anything though and the referee waves him back to his feet.
Thiago Silva
Yellow Card
55' It's a late challenge from Silva on Redmond, and he's shown a yellow card.
54' The visitors can't clear their lines from a corner and it comes to Chilwell at the byline. He does well to keep it in play, but the offside flag goes up against him before he can clip a cross back into the crowd.
52' Southampton are still trying to press Chelsea high upfield, but they just can't get close to the hosts at the moment. Tella almost intercepts a pass back to Chilwell, but can't get enough on it to win back possession.
50' Ward-Prowse steps in to nick it off Hudson-Odoi and sets Southampton on the counter. He switches it out to Tella on the left, but his cross takes a deflection off Silva which just takes it away from Armstrong.
48' Hudson-Odoi just turns away from Bednarek before squaring it to Werner on the edge of the box. He takes it away from Salisu with his first touch before drilling a low shot on goal, but it's held onto by McCarthy.
46' Chelsea get us back underway for the second half!
I. Diallo
T. Walcott
46' There's a change for Southampton at the start of the second half as Walcott makes way for Diallo.
It's been a good reaction by Chelsea after their recent results, but Tuchel, who was frustrated by the disallowed goal, will think they should be further ahead. Southampton have had a couple of good moments going forward, but they need to be more clinical with the chances they do create if they want to get back into the game.
Chalobah's early goal gives Chelsea a 1-0 lead at half-time. Nine minutes in, Loftus-Cheek glanced on a corner which Chalobah dived onto to nod the hosts into the lead. Mendy made a good save to deny Armstrong before McCarthy kept out Chilwell at the other end. Werner thought he'd doubled the advantage just before the break when he headed in, but the goal was disallowed by VAR for a foul by Azpilicueta in the build-up.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON.
45' + 1' Southampton break quickly on the counter again and Tella makes a great run down the left, but his cross is blocked by Chalobah. He gets a second attempt at it, but it's another poor attempt that's cleared by Silva.
Yellow Card
44' Tuchel is furious with the decision to disallow the goal and he's making his feelings known on the sidelines. The referee goes across to him and the Chelsea manager is booked for his reaction.
43' NO GOAL! Martin Atkinson has been asked to go over to the monitor and have a look at a possible foul in the build-up. After watching the replays, he judges that Azpilicueta fouled Walker-Peters to win the ball back and the goal doesn't count. Still 1-0!
41' WERNER SCORES! Southampton just can't clear their lines and Chelsea make them pay. It's played back out to Hudson-Odoi on the left, and he lifts a good cross back into the far post where Werner rises highest to head the ball past McCarthy, but VAR is having a look at this...
40' BLOCK! Livramento is dispossessed deep in Chelsea's half which allows the hosts to counter and Hudson-Odoi is driving forward through the middle. He takes it to the edge of the six-yard box, but as he sets himself for the shot, Livramento slides in to make an important block.
38' A clever bit of footwork from Loftus-Cheek gets him away from Ward-Prowse before Azpilicueta switches it out to Kovacic. He pulls it back for Werner, and he hits the shot first time, but it's well-blocked by Romeu.
36' OFFSIDE! Rudiger is slipped in by Chilwell deep in his own half and allowed to carry the ball a long way. From the edge of the D, he slides it through to Lukaku, who slots it into the bottom corner. It's a tight call, but he just set off too early and it won't count.
Oriol Romeu
Yellow Card
34' Romeu sticks out a leg to trip Kovacic after the ball is knocked past him and he's shown the first yellow card of the game.
33' GREAT CHANCE! It's a wonderful weaving run from Walker-Peters which gets him away from Azpilicueta and Chalobah down the left before he pulls it back from the byline. Walcott is rushing onto it, but can't flick his header on target.
32' Another sloppy pass from Southampton allows Chelsea to break on the counter, with Loftus-Cheek leading the way through the middle. He has Werner making a good run to his right, but the throughball is cut out by Walker-Peters.
30' Chilwell takes the corner short this time before getting it back off Kovacic. He cuts into the box and goes for goal himself, drilling a low shot towards the near post, but McCarthy holds onto this one.
28' Redmond has space to cut into the box, but he plays it forward for Walker-Peters instead. He floats a good cross into the near post, but once again, can't pick out a team-mate as Chelsea clear their lines.
26' GOOD SAVE! Chilwell touches it into Kovacic on the edge of the box before continuing his run. He's one-on-one with McCarthy when he gets the ball back and tries to catch him out at his near post, but the keeper sticks out a leg to deny him.
24' Hudson-Odoi is causing Southampton all sorts of problems down the left here and he initially does well to hold off Bednarek. He knocks it past the defender to try and carry on his run before being bundled to the floor.
22' Chelsea go straight down the other end and Werner cuts inside before seeing a shot blocked by Walker-Peters. It falls nicely for Loftus-Cheek, who hits it on the volley, and sends it just wide of the near post.
21' CLOSE! Southampton are on the attack again and Walcott cushions Tella's cross down for Ward-Prowse. He hits the shot on the half-volley, drilling it towards the near post, but it's just wide of the target.
20' Walcott does well to hold off Chilwell as he waits for support to join him. He squares it to Armstrong just outside the area, and he takes the shot early, but Mendy gets down to save it at his far post.
19' Chalobah is Chelsea's joint-top scorer at Stamford Bridge under Tuchel (two goals), despite only attempting two shots.
17' There are some nervy moments at the back for Chelsea again as the Southampton forwards are still pressing them high upfield. Armstrong closes down Mendy this time before the hosts win a free-kick when Tella gets too close to Chalobah.
15' It's a poor corner into the box for Southampton which is cleared at the near post by Silva, but it falls to Walcott. He's a long way out when he hits the shot on the volley, but his wild effort flies straight into the stands.
13' Mendy's clearance is gifted straight to Romeu, and he slides a good throughball into Armstrong. He can't open up the space for a shot, so lays it off to Walcott, but his cross is put out for a corner off Rudiger.
11' Kovacic switches play out to Azpilicueta on the right, and he curls a great ball into the box for Lukaku to run onto. He has Bednarek tight to him though and the defender blocks his first-time shot.
R. Loftus-Cheek
Assist
9' None of the Southampton defenders are picking up Loftus-Cheek on the corner, and he rises high to flick it towards the far post.
T. Chalobah
Goal
9' CHELSEA LEAD! It's a good corner from Chilwell into the box that's flicked on by Loftus-Cheek in the middle. Chalobah is unmarked at the far post and he stoops to get on the end of it, nodding his effort into the back of the net before McCarthy can react. 1-0 Chelsea!
7' Tella nicks the ball off Werner on the halfway line and strides forward through the middle before running into Rudiger. He sets Hudson-Odoi on the counter and he tries to switch it out to Chilwell, but they're not on the same wavelength and he gifts it back to Southampton.
5' SAVE! Chelsea break quickly and Azpilicueta drills a low cross into the near post where Werner is waiting. He takes the shot first time, but McCarthy rushes off his line to smother it and send it looping over the bar.
4' Azpilicueta plays the ball back to Mendy and Redmond is sprinting across to the keeper to close him down. He almost nicks it off him, but the keeper keeps a calm head to take it around him and clear his lines.
2' Southampton have started brightly and are helped by some sloppiness at the back for Chelsea. Rudiger's clearance goes straight to Tella, who slides it through to Walcott, and they win a free-kick when he's tripped by Hudson-Odoi.
1' Armstrong gets the game underway for Southampton!
