  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ruud Gullit has claimed many clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, are losing their identity and DNA, causing a disconnect with their fans. He pointed to recently-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool, who appointed Arne Slot to replace previous boss Jurgen Klopp last summer, as the example for modern teams to follow.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea and United have both been criticised in recent months for losing connection with their fanbases. It was recently revealed Blues chief Todd Boehly is the co-owner of a website which sells Premier League tickets at inflated prices, while Sir Jim Ratcliffe has faced backlash after the Red Devils raised season ticket prices for the third consecutive season. Liverpool, meanwhile, ensured continuity with their style of play with the appointment of Slot following Klopp's departure and were rewarded with a top-flight title as they saw off competition from Arsenal.

  • WHAT GULLIT SAID

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Gullit said: "You see clubs nowadays that are run more by business than by heart. You see it with AC Milan, with Roma, with Chelsea and Man Utd, that they don't understand it for some reason. It feels like the heart is out of the club.

"What I like for Liverpool is that Klopp gave you a DNA. What is Liverpool all about? And they got another coach who did exactly the same. That's what you need to do, you have to build on that same DNA.

"Fans get upset because they can't recognise it. They say, 'What the hell is this all?' That is the most difficult part nowadays."

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL, CHELSEA AND MAN UTD?

Liverpool's appointment of Slot was totally vindicated by their Premier League title win, but Enzo Maresca and Ruben Amorim both have a lot of work to do to show they can add to the legacies of Chelsea and United respectively. Both have chances to claim silverware before the seasons ends, with the Blues in the Conference League semi-finals and the Red Devils reaching the last four of the Europa League.
