There were a few lessons learned from the first round of matches in the PSL this past weekend

  • Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United - August 2019 Dean Furman and Lebohang Maboe

Sundowns are still strong despite fewer signings

Mamelodi Sundowns proved their strength with a comfortable 2-0 win over SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby.

This is despite making fewer signings compared to the likes of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs so far in this transfer window.

Pitso Mosimane has kept his team consistent, including Hlompho Kekana, Denis Onyango and Thapelo Morena among others.

  • Lebogang Manyama, Kaizer Chiefs, August 2019

Manyama is slowly finding his feet at Chiefs

It is early to make conclusions, but Lebogang Manyama appears to be rediscovering his form.

The attacker scored two goals to help Kaizer Chiefs register a hard-fought 3-2 win over Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium.

Manyama struggled for form in his first season at Chiefs, but if he continues to be used regularly, he can be Ernst Middendorp's leading striker this season.

  • Thabiso Monyane Orlando Pirates August 2019

Orlando Pirates players buying Micho's philosophy

Micho Sredojevic was criticised for making too many signings even though Orlando Pirates looked strong in all departments.

However, his team played the first match of the season as if they have been together for a long time.

The new and old players are learning Sredojevic's style and have bought into his philosophy.

  • Abbubaker Mobara - Cape Town City

Cape Town City missed Benni McCarthy

Cape Town City missed their head coach Benni McCarthy for their opening game due to family commitments.

His absence hit the players hard, as their tactics applied against Baroka FC backfired.

It is for this reason the Citizens squandered a two-goal lead to eventually draw 2-2 with Baroka. City would probably have won the game if Benni was on the bench.

  • Steve Barker - Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch will be tough to beat

Stellenbosch FC is going to enjoy their first season in the top-flight, but they played like seasoned campaigners against Chippa United

Mind you, Steve Barker's side was away from home, but they still managed to keep a clean sheet and steal a point.

One can only imagine what they would achieve in front of their home fans throughout the season.
