Wanyama's outstanding moments in Kenya shirt

The defensive midfielder announced that he would no longer play for the national side, but which moments with the Harambee Stars can be described as his most memorable ones?
  • McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama.

    Debut at 15

The midfielder made his debut at 15 years of age in May 2007 as Kenya battled and eventually lost 1-0 to Nigeria in a friendly game. He went on to represent the Harambee Stars for 14 years.

    Wanyama appointed captain

He was given the captain's armband by Adel Amrouche in 2013 - ahead of a World Cup qualifier against Nigeria - when many thought Dennis Oliech was the natural so take the leadership responsibility.

"Wanyama was always in training, he came on time and he was really humble. He related well with the team and always had a big heart for the team," Amrouche said in defence of his choice.

    World Cup Qualifiers

The Lion of Muthurwa - as the CF Montreal midfielder is famously known - played in all of Kenya's five 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

The Harambee Stars did not qualify and the search for a maiden ticket to the global bonanza continues today.

    Afcon Qualification

He was the captain when Kenya finally managed to grab a ticket to the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt in 2019. The nation had last appeared in the continental showpiece in 2004 in Tunisia when Musa Otieno was the captain.
  • Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga.

    Moment with big brother, Mariga

In a rare occasion, Wanyama and his older brother McDonald Mariga featured for the national side during a 2012 Afcon qualifier against Angola in 2011.

Wanyama came on in the second half - alongside Jamal Mohamed, who gave Kenya the equaliser - before Mariga scored the winning goal in the 87th minute to hand the Harambee Stars a 2-1 win.

The last time Kenya had witnessed two brothers in the same lineup was in 1997 when Otieno and Erick Omondi - as central defenders - played against Nigeria.
