The result meant Paris Saint-Germain still progressed to the semi-finals 5-4 on aggregate but Dembele was in a furious mood after the game and could be seen shunning the award when it was handed to him by a member of staff. Having stormed off the pitch, he was later photographed with the accolade and wore a blank expression on his face.

PSG seemed to have the quarter-final tie under control when they led 2-1 at Villa Park only for Villa to launch a roaring comeback in the second half. The Ligue 1 champions were holding on at the end of the game and Dembele lamented his side's complacency, saying: "We thought we were too good. At 2-1, we thought we were already qualified and that it was over. That's how the Champions League goes. You face teams whose supporters are white-hot and they can turn the game on its head."

PSG will face the winner of the tie between Arsenal and Real Madrid in the final four, with the Gunners leading 3-0 heading into Wednesday's second leg. The French champions must first navigate a home game with Le Havre in Ligue 1 on Saturday as they aim to go a full league campaign unbeaten.
