  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea were in advanced negotiations to sign Maignan in June ahead of the Club World Cup but failed to reach an agreement with AC Milan. The Blues offered the Rossoneri €10 million (£8.6m/$11.7m), well short of Milan’s €30 million (£25.8m/$35.2m) valuation, leading to a deadline day collapse. With just one year left on Maignan’s contract, speculation over his future had grown.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maignan had emerged as Chelsea’s top goalkeeping target, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen considered less reliable long-term options. The Rossoneri were reluctant to part with the Frenchman despite contract uncertainty and recent links to the Premier League. Allegri's return to AC Milan and direct involvement in talks played a crucial role in shutting the transfer down, and the former Juventus boss has now confirmed the same.

  • WHAT MAIGNAN SAID

Speaking to the media on Monday, Allegri said: "Maignan remains the captain and is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. I am very happy he decided to stay."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAIGNAN?

Chelsea are now likely to stick with monitoring Maignan's contract situation from afar. The Blues could revisit the deal in January, though Milan’s stance suggests little room for compromise. For now, Allegri has closed the door, and Chelsea must look elsewhere.
